Family Althoff
The property allowed only a compact building structure. However, it is located in the town where Christian and Ute Althoff have been rooted for many years, where they have friends and where their son has grown up. “We wanted a home of our own for a long time, but there were no building plots in our area,” the building owner recounts. When a larger building area was finally opened up, the family seized the opportunity and built – small and beautiful, nothing excessive, but tasteful and following the principle that ‘less is more.’ “We left out everything that was not essential: colour, roof overhang, entrance roof, basement, doors.” It is this design trick that makes the house seem so large and practical, despite its small dimensions of 8.60 x 9.00 metres.
Plenty of living comfort in a compact space
A consistent, white, single-family home development with anthracite-coloured roofing gives a certain elegance to the new housing estate at the foot of the Swabian Alb hills. In between, the green of the newly created lawns and freshly planted trees is almost lit up. The almost cube-shaped, white, rendered building structure of the Althoff house discreetly blends in here. Yet, with its height-offset mono-pitched roofs and striking window formats, the house makes a strong architectural statement. The placement is precisely coordinated. This makes the façade appear both tidy and fascinating on all sides. Anthracite represents the connecting element between the roof, garage door, front door and windows. The panelling and the gravel surfaces as well as the water feature in front of the patio are arranged so that they enter into dialogue with the house. The garage enhances the ensemble.
Behind the entrance on the right is the large, very practically furnished utility and technology room with washing machine and dryer. The home technology is concealed behind wall units. “This is also where we store provisions, shoes, winter sports equipment and everything else that would otherwise be kept in the basement,” Ute Althoff says. A cloakroom and guest WC complete the generous hall area. A modern framework structure, which serves as a room divider and at the same time allows a view through, allows access to the open-plan living/dining area with professional kitchen and patio access. The luxuriously sized island with storage space from two sides is a morning meeting point. The man of the house prepares breakfast here, which his wife likes to have standing directly at the counter before setting off for work. Christian Althoff has a more relaxed start to the day, tidies the kitchen and then retreats to his home office, unless he has a customer meeting out of the house.
A beautifully curved staircase takes him to the upper floor. Instead of a rail, glass panes have been fitted here as a safety barrier. The dark steps behind look like a room sculpture. Since his son moved out to study in London, Christian Althoff has been gradually rearranging the teen bedroom into an office. “But there is a comfortable sofa bed available for our son at any time,” the father assures us. A second sofa bed is in the small, adjoining room. This is intended as a guest bed. Ute Althoff uses the room primarily as a place to retreat, for example to read, as you need a private space especially in a living environment with such an open design. Yet wonderful relaxation after a stressful day at work can also be found in the free-standing bath amid the homely furnishings of the bathroom with its sheepskin rug and towel warmer. From there it is only a short hop to the bed. To achieve a generous sense of space in the bedroom, there is no dressing room.
The modest furnishing style in white and grey colours and with plenty of storage space behind smooth fronts is broken up by natural wood, such as the sculpture in the dining area or the sawn-out tree discs in the framed passage between hall and living area. Warm, cosy materials, such as the sheepskin on the dining chairs or the little fur stool in the hall, contribute to the homely ambience. A few carefully placed pieces of furniture leave the family plenty of space for their own creativity. They often redecorate according to season. “In the kitchen at the moment we have a large wall picture of our last holiday in the mountains,” Ute Althoff recounts. Plenty of design in a small space – It works.
